About Me
Baseball has been a part of me since I was five or six years old. I learned to play catch on a diamond that was a two-mile bike ride from my house. I vividly recall placing my Carl Yastrzemski mitt through the handle bars and heading off to Baldardvale Field in my hometown of Andover, Massachusetts. And just like in the movie “Sandlot,” my friends and I would play until the street lights came on.
My love for the Boston Red Sox goes back to the mid-60's, when my dad had season tickets. Watching Tony Conigliaro, Jim Lonborg, George "Boomer" Scott, "Yaz"... and my favorite, Rico Petrocelli... along with the rest of the 1967 World Series team will always be special to me.
My years of playing baseball dovetailed nicely with my growing love of sports. As Head Baseball Coach and Director of Athletics at the Winchendon School, I purchased and maintained baseball, football, and hockey equipment. This was followed by twelve years in Southern California, as a sales representative for Spalding Sports Worldwide.
While in my sales territory I played on several ranked U.S.S.S.A. men’s softball teams. In the beautiful Southern California weather, I played in all four seasons. During this time I was asked to attend Spring Training in Arizona. The Cactus League has 12 professional teams.
My assignment was to introduce Spalding's new line of professional-grade leather gloves. Inside the clubhouses of the Diamondbacks, Cubs, Rockies, Mariners, and Padres, I learned more about baseball than I could possibly have dreamed... including the proper breaking-in of a baseball glove, caring for the leather, adjustments to webs, and so forth. With help from Spalding headquarters and a little luck, I was able to sign several professional baseball players to Spalding baseball glove contracts... Todd Zeal, Dante Bichette, Charlie Hayes, and the “Big Cat” Andres Galarraga, to name just a few.
As a high school baseball coach for years, which opened the door to work and sell Spalding sports equipment. I was able to learn how to relace baseball and softball gloves and mitts. Now living in Tampa Bay, I play in two softball leagues: 3SCORE/Top of the World.
